Šostakovitš: THE SHADOW VOICE OF THE MACHINE
10.6.2025 @ 19:00 - 21:00
Dmitri Shostakovich’s (1906–1975) career spanned the history of the Soviet Union, from the Russian Revolution to the power vacuum after Stalin’s reign. Living as the voice of the people’s conscience was dangerous: every work created in the shadow of the regime could have been his last. In the evening in Naantali, we will hear Shostakovich’s music, ranging from his student years to the peak of his mature period. The piano trio of the teenage prodigy resonates with a promise of a brilliant future, while the cello sonata of the composer who became a global star reaches toward classical clarity. With the great success of the piano quintet, Shostakovich was granted a brief respite from the Kremlin – but only for a moment.
