Our homage to the sea, a tradition of the Naantali Music Festival, treads the paths laid out by Jaakko Kuusisto and Franz Schubert. Although Kuusisto did not always compose for the sea, probably not a bar of music would have been composed had he not found inspiration from his sailing trips. The chamber works Miniö and Play II take on a cinematic air, whereas Jurmo, born in the Archipelago Sea, navigates the nightly waves with impressionism. Composed by Franz Schubert at the age of 22, the quintet carries the nickname “Die Forelle”, or “The Trout”, but it is not just any little piece of music; a monument in chamber music, the piece meanders along beautifully like a fiord, sparkles like a lake and embraces you like the ocean stretching across the horizon.
