In the final years of his short life, Franz Schubert plunged into the deepest core of symbolism. He may not have known he was dying, but his music already seemed to sense the worst. His most deeply moving work, the song cycle Winterreise (Winter Journey), explores the eternal questions of human existence with searing intensity and personal depth. It tells the story of a wanderer disappointed in love, drifting through frost and memories, filled with suppressed sorrow, bitterness, defiance, and fear of death. The darkness veiled in frost takes on a nostalgic glow as pianist Ralf Gothóni and tenor Tuomas Katajala perform this timeless classic in the light of a summer evening.
