Three works, three openings, three composers who followed their passion. Ludwig van Beethoven broke the norms of the Classical era with Symphony No. 3, where heroic feats opened 19th century emotional floodgates. Tired of the Romantic pathos, Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun by Claude Debussy with its dreamy flute solos paved the way for 20th century impressionism. Preparing the ground for modernity, Chamber Symphony composed by Arnold Schoenberg in 1906 shocked his contemporaries so deeply that the premiere ended in a fist fight.
