The multiple award-winner Yajie Zhangista has quickly become a sought-after singer in the world’s most prestigious opera houses as well as on concert stages. She began her vocal studies in Shanghai and continued her studies in Hannover and Bavarian Opera’s young singer’s programme. Since 2022 she has been a member of the ensemble at Oper Leipzig.
Zhang has received numerous prices in diverse competitions. By 2017, she had already attracted international attention as the youngest contestant at the International Vocal Competition ’s-Hertogenbosch, where she was awarded the Grand Prix as well as the Opera and Junior Jury prizes.
Music is an omen, at least for Gustav Mahler. Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the Death of Children) was written three years before the death of his own child. He composed Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth), a symphony that ends in a farewell, to avoid the same fate that had led Schubert and Beethoven to an early grave – alas, things turned out differently. Legendary lied pianist Hartmut Höll and rising star Yajie Zhang perform Mahler’s songs, whose prophecies came true.
